The Austin AGC serves as the voice of Austin’s commercial construction industry at the local, state, and national levels of government. Thanks to the support of our membership, we are able to have a positive impact on business issues that affect all local commercial contractors, whether they are members or not.
The Austin AGC works on behalf of all local contractors on issues before the Austin City Council, Travis County Commissioners Court, Austin Independent School District and numerous other government entities. Recent issues of importance include construction noise in downtown Austin and construction requirements for Austin Community College (ACC) bond project.
The Austin AGC helps fund the AGC Texas Building Branch (TBB), the statewide advocacy office for all AGC Building Chapters in the State of Texas. Located here in Austin, the TBB belongs to all Texas AGC serves and the collective representative of the Texas commercial construction industry in the state capitol. The TBB employs two full-time lobbyists and one contract lobbyist to work with the state legislature and state offices on issues of importance to our industry. The legislative session in 2015 was very successful for the commercial construction industry, and a full report from our AGC TBB lobbyists is available here. Among the good news:
- Texas contractors will see more that $3 billion in bids for construction projects at public universities over the next two years under the state legislature’s approved budget.
- Texas is poised to see roughly $1.7 billion in the construction of new buildings and repair of aging structures over the next two years.
- The legislature agreed on a 25 percent across-the board cut to the franchise tax that will save Texas businesses more than $2 billion over the next two years and allow more businesses to use a simplified method of computing what they own under the tax.
Membership in the Austin Chapter AGC helps support the work performed by the AGC of America at the federal government level. Hot issues include taxation, immigration reform, market development, materials pricing and economic forecasting.
